Alfie is a cat who became homeless after his owner died. He needed to learn to survive on the streets. After doing so, he determined never to be homeless (or hungry, etc.) again, so decided to have more than one owner. He eventually was semi-owned by four families, and made a difference in all of their lives for the better. In particular, he strived to protect them. In real life, a cat might not understand things quite as well as Alfie does, although there are places where it's clear that as a cat, he doesn't follow everything. But I believe animals have emotions, and that they aren't exaggerated in this story. In the long run there is a happy ending, but the narrative is not saccharine or overdone, and the situations in which the humans find themselves are realistic. Anyone who likes cats will appreciate this story. As a confirmed cat lover, there is no way I could give this book anything but five stars! I'll admit I bought this book a little cautiously because I usually prefer action, mystery, edge-of-your-seat suspense. Who knew you could make a cat's adventure so exciting? Apparently Rachel Wells, the author, knew. Maybe not edge-of-your-seat excitement but enough to keep you wondering what would happen next! Alfie is definitely an extraordinary cat but, if you are a cat owner, you can see things your own cat might do. Then you just nod your head, smile and continue reading more of Alfie's adventure. This is an adorable story - one to sit on the beach and read or curl up in a comfortable chair with and, maybe, if you have a cat of your own, they will curl up with you as you enjoy an absolutely delightful story.
